Creating Skit Reels: Building Your Foundation

Think of your favorite viral TikToks or Instagram Reels – the short, attention-grabbing videos that instantly captivate. Now, imagine creating your own characters and scenes in that same exciting, fast-paced world. Welcome to Creating Skit Reels: Building Your Foundation at APS — the perfect place for young actors to dive into the world of short-form content creation. This term, we’ll focus on developing characters, experimenting with scenes, and creating the proof of concept that will kickstart your skit reel journey.

Character Development & Scene Building

Throughout the term, students will have the chance to create their own characters from scratch and build unique worlds around them. Working in pairs or small groups, they’ll explore different character motivations, quirks, and relationships, and experiment with crafting short, engaging scenes. Through a variety of improvisation exercises, students will develop their characters and collaborate creatively with their peers to bring these ideas to life. Students are encouraged to bring back characters from last year’s short films, as those characters, concepts, and ideas are an excellent place to start from if they wish to revisit and build upon them.

Proof of Concept Reel

By the end of the Term 2, students will review their professionally edited proof of concept reel, showcasing their characters and creative work. This is the first step in developing a polished skit reel and will lay the groundwork for next term’s full filming process.

In-House APS Screening & Reel Distribution

At the end of Term 3, on Saturday, 20th September, we’ll host an in-house showing at APS Moorabbin, where students can view their peers’ creative work. Each student will receive their edited reel via AirDrop or WeTransfer that night, making it easy to take home their finished work. Once you have your fresh new skit, you’ll be free to share the fun with friends and family!
